Description

FTDI Serial Breakout Board

This FTDI Adapter is a breakout board for the FTD232R serial to USB converter chip. It can be used to add serial communication via USB to any microchip with an UART. It is also used as a programming adapter for Arduino compatible boards that do not have an onboard FTDI chip, such as the Arduino Pro.

Features

  • USB mini-B connector
  • Standard RX/TX serial port header
  • 5V or 3.3V Power selectable, default work at 3V3, connect the on-board jumper to switch to 5V
  • Pre-assembled

Usage

You will need a USB mini-B cable (not included). Windows users will need to download drivers from the FTDI webpage. On OS X and Linux, no drivers are required. The device will show up as a serial port.

Usage as a Programming Adapter in the Arduino IDE

Once the adapter has been plugged in, open the Arduino IDE. Go to the Tools -> Serial Ports menu, and you should see the assigned serial port there. Make sure that it is selected.

Now, plug the 6-pin female header into your Arduino or Arduino compatible board. Make sure it goes the right way in: The names of the pins are marked on the adapter, and should be marked on your board as well.

Make sure you select the correct board type in the Tools -> Board menu. Once that is completed, you can use the upload button in the toolbar to upload your sketch.

Usage as a Debugging Port

Anything you print using the Serial library in Arduino will be printed to the serial port on your computer.

Note Not Genuine IC will have much more error programming.

Example sketch:

void setup() {

Serial.begin(9600);

Serial.println(“Hello world”);

}

    Really reliable and worth to buy product. I use it for any Arduino and other serial devices communication. 3,3 V level option is very usable and safe.

    Does the whole chip can be run at 3.3V? Would it be possible to publish a picture of the back?

    Is there a way to run the chip entirely in 3.3V? When you say “5V or 3.3V selectable with solder headers”, it is not very clear. I would like to have the entire chip running in 3.3V in order to have ALL the pins at 3.3V level. Is it possible?
